This grant, offered by NCI, NIDA, and NCCIH, is for prospective research studies to assess the benefits and harms of cannabis and cannabinoid use among adult cancer patients undergoing active treatment. The purpose is to fund well-designed prospective cohort studies comparing cannabis/cannabinoid users with non-users among patients with solid or hematologic tumors. The departments strongly encourage applications that include diverse populations by age, sex, race/ethnicity, tumor types, and geography, utilizing population-based recruitment strategies like cancer registries. Funded studies will collaborate with a dedicated coordinating center and NIH program staff to advance understanding in this critical area of cancer care.

Description: | Through this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), NCI, NIDA, and NCCIH invite Cooperative Agreement (U01) applications that propose prospective research studies to assess the benefits and harms of cannabis and cannabinoid use among adult cancer patients during active treatment. NCI, NIDA, and NCCIH are seeking well-designed prospective cohort studies of cancer patients with solid or hematologic tumors currently receiving treatment. Studies are expected to compare cancer patients who use cannabis/cannabinoids with cancer patients that do not use cannabis and/or cannabinoids. Research studies including diverse populations by age, sex, race/ethnicity, tumor types, and/or geography and propose population-based recruitment strategies using cancer registries are strongly encouraged. This FOA is published in parallel with RFA-CA-22-053 “Coordinating Center for Cannabis and Cannabinoid Use in Adult Cancer Patients During Treatment: Assessing Benefits and Harms (U24 Clinical Trial Not Allowed). New prospective studies and the coordinating center funded under these FOAs will work together with NIH program staff. |
