This grant is for determining the presence and distribution of the endangered Indiana Bat (Myotis sodalist) in Southeastern Nebraska. The Nebraska Wildlife Department is offering this opportunity to conduct crucial ecological research. The primary objective is to ascertain if Indiana bats currently inhabit the region through comprehensive survey methods. Tasks include mist-netting specifically within Indian Cave State Park to directly capture and identify bat species. Additionally, ultrasonic detectors will be utilized to record bat echolocation calls across the survey area. These recordings will be instrumental in pinpointing locations with high bat activity, thereby identifying the most promising areas for further capture efforts. This research is vital for conservation planning and protecting this vulnerable species.
