Background:
Nicodemus, Kansas is the only remaining western town established by African Americans during the Reconstruction period following the Civil War. It is symbolic of the pioneer spirit of African Americans who dared to seek personal freedom and the opportunity to develop their talents and capabilities on the Great Plains. Nicodemus, Kansas is located in the high plains of northwestern Kansas, 13 miles east of Hill City and 21 miles west of Stockton, each with populations of approximately 1,200 to 1,400 people. There are reasonable housing options available in the nearby towns of Bogue (5 miles), Hill City, and Stockton. Hill City and Stockton both have grocery stores, libraries, and limited restaurant facilities. Hill City is the Graham County seat, and does have a hospital. Due to its rural location having a vehicle for transportation is necessary.
