The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is offering this grant to investigate the effects of anti-retroviral therapy (ART) on neuronal and glial structure and function in individuals with HIV. This grant is for the purpose of understanding how ART, particularly when occurring in a background of chronic exposure to abused drugs like opioids, cocaine, stimulants, cannabinoids, and nicotine, contributes to neurological and neurocognitive deficits. The overall goal is to determine the contributions of ARV treatment regimens to HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders (HAND) and to elucidate the mechanisms behind these impairments.
