This grant aims to address significant gaps hindering the effective use of decentralized clinical trials (DCT) for Substance Use Disorder (SUD) research. Current physiological sensors are underutilized and require further validation for SUD contexts. A critical need exists for wearable or home-use detection devices capable of measuring substances of interest, including methadone, buprenorphine, their metabolites, and illicit drugs, which are currently unavailable or not designed for diagnostics/treatment. Most existing measurement devices are laboratory-based and lack standard software interfaces for seamless data transmission to study centers. This initiative seeks innovative solutions to develop and validate new tools and technologies that overcome these limitations, thereby enhancing the feasibility and impact of DCTs in the substance use area.

Additional Information
Agency Name: | National Institutes of Health |
Description: | There are gaps that prevent the utilization of decentralized clinical trials (DCT) in substance use area. The existing sensors for physiological measurement are rarely used and may need further validation. There are no wearable or home-use detection devices on the market capable to measure substances of interest (e.g., methadone, buprenorphine, their metabolites, as well as the spectrum of illicit drugs). The devices in development are not intended for diagnostics or treatment. Most of the devices are intended for laboratory use. Most of the devices do not have standard software interface through which the devices can transmit the data to the study center. |
