The NIH is offering this H3Africa Research Grant to African institutions focusing on human health and heredity. This grant is for studying genomic, genetic, and environmental factors contributing to health and disease across Africa, using cutting-edge tools. Its core purpose is to enhance understanding of diseases affecting African populations and to significantly build biomedical research capacity, including developing infrastructure, data resources, improving genomic proficiency, and increasing trainees. Supported by the NIH Common Fund and Wellcome Trust, this initiative promotes sustainable research to combat disease and enhance health outcomes in Africa, aligning with NIH’s mission.

Description: | This NIH Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), supported by funds from the NIH Common Fund (Common Fund) and participating NIH Institute(s) and Center(s), invites applications from foreign Institutions in African countries who wish to develop the study of genomic/genetic/environmental contributors of human health and disease within Africa, using cutting edge research tools to understand health and diseases affecting African populations more completely and increase capacity for biomedical research, in terms of building infrastructure (including data and research resources), genomic proficiency of researchers and numbers of trainees. In partnership with the Wellcome Trust, the H3Africa initiative is focused on supporting these efforts as part of an effort to promote sustainable research in Africa that will promote health and combat disease.
The purpose of this FOA is to call for applications for research projects. Awards will focus on supporting research on the genetic/environmental contributors to health and disease in Africa that fall within the mission of the NIH, which is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and to apply that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce the burdens of illness and disability. |
