The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is offering this grant to fund social science research on indigent criminal defense services, policies, and practices. This grant is for examining services provided by state, county, city, or tribal public defender offices, contract lawyers, court-appointed counsel, and pro bono attorneys. Research can encompass pretrial, trial, post-conviction, or appellate stages for both juvenile and adult defendants. NIJ encourages studies on access to and waiver of counsel by juveniles and adults, or the effectiveness of other defense team members. However, other strong research proposals will also be considered, aiming to deepen understanding of indigent defense.
