The NSF Division of Chemistry is offering the Centers for Chemical Innovation (CCI) Program grant to establish and support research centers dedicated to addressing major, long-term fundamental chemical research challenges. This grant is for producing transformative research, fostering innovation, and attracting significant scientific and public interest. CCIs are designed to be agile, leveraging cyberinfrastructure and partnering with industry, government, and international organizations. They integrate research, innovation, education, and informal science communication, with a strong focus on broadening participation. The program is structured in two phases. Projects aligning with Sustainable Chemistry, Engineering and Materials (SusChEM), Cyberinfrastructure Framework for the 21st Century (CIF-21), and Cyber-enabled Materials, Manufacturing and Smart Systems (CEMMSS) are particularly encouraged.

Description: | The Centers for Chemical Innovation (CCI) Program supports research centers focused on major, long-term fundamental chemical research challenges. CCIs that address these challenges will produce transformative research, lead to innovation, and attract broad scientific and public interest. CCIs are agile structures that can respond rapidly to emerging opportunities and make full use of cyberinfrastructure to enhance collaborations. CCIs may partner with researchers from industry, government laboratories and international organizations. CCIs integrate research, innovation, education, and informal science communication and include a plan to broaden participation of underrepresented groups. The CCI program is a two-phase program. Both phases are described in this solicitation. Phase I CCIs receive significant resources to develop the science and integrative elements of a CCI before requesting Phase II funding. Phase I proposals funded in FY 2013 will seek Phase II funding in FY 2016. Only organizations receiving Phase I awards in FY2010 are eligible to request new Phase II funding in FY 2013. This solicitation is also open to the renewal of Phase II CCIs initiated in FY 2008.The FY 2013 CCI competition is open to projects in fields supported by the NSF Division of Chemistry. Projects responsive to current priorities in Sustainable Chemistry, Engineering and Materials (SusChEM), Cyberinfrastructure Framework for the 21st Century (CIF-21) and Cyber-enabled Materials, Manufacturing and Smart Systems (CEMMSS) are particularly encouraged. |
