This grant is for the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) to enhance its comprehensive program of statistical data collection, specifically focusing on documenting justice system activities on tribal lands. Building upon existing collections targeting federal justice, tribal jails, and tribal courts, this initiative addresses critical information gaps. The core of this effort involves conducting two distinct, yet related, surveys: one targeting state and local law enforcement agencies, and another for state and local prosecutor offices. These surveys will gather essential information on administrative procedures, specific tribal caseloads, and the range of services these agencies provide within tribal jurisdictions. Furthermore, the surveys will assess the capabilities of these agencies to accurately report detailed data on tribal matters they handle, contributing to a more complete understanding of justice services in Indian Country.

Description: | The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) is developing a comprehensive program of statistical data collection efforts to document justice system activities on tribal lands. Current collections target the federal justice system, jails in Indian Country, crimes reported by tribal law enforcement agencies, and tribal court systems. The proposed data collections will fill two major information gaps. This effort will conduct two separate, but related, surveys: one of the state and local law enforcement agencies and one of state and local prosecutor offices that provide justice services on tribal lands. These surveys will solicit information on administrative procedures and practices, tribal caseloads and provided services, and the capabilities of the agencies to report detailed data on the tribal matters they handle. |
