Applications from investigators within the military services and other federal agencies are encouraged, as are applications involving multidisciplinary collaborations among academia, industry, the military services, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and other federal government agencies.The results of the research funded through this Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity are expected to increase the body of knowledge available to professionals and practitioners in health, medical science and related fields. The research impact is expected to benefit the military community and civilian community, particularly as it relates to the following Priority Areas: 1) multi-center development and assessment of the impact of checklists on standardization of burn care and improvement of outcomes in burn patients; 2) multicenter studies of ICU-based rehabilitation outcomes, i.e., evaluation of physical and rehabilitation technologies/therapies directed at(a) short-term ICU outcomes (decreasing ICU length of stay and ventilator days),(b) understanding the effect of rehabilitation on pathophysiology in the ICU burn patient, and (c) documenting the efficacy of these immediate ICU interventions on long-term quality-of-life outcomes such as the return-to-work/duty rate; 3) device/drug development and validation for inhalation lung injury; and 4) research into the formation of hypertrophic scarring and the development of therapies to manage the condition |
