This grant, the DoD Autism Pilot Award, is for supporting innovative, high-risk/high-reward research aimed at driving significant advancements in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It encourages projects with testable hypotheses and strong scientific rationale, focusing on critical discoveries rather than incremental steps or continuations of existing studies. The program seeks to foster multidisciplinary collaborations, including special education, biomedical science, and preclinical research. Key objectives include developing and validating biologically relevant animal models, investigating the implications of immunological responses in ASD, and leveraging existing biological samples, clinical populations, and databases to strengthen research outcomes. This initiative aims to push the boundaries of ASD understanding.

Description: | The ARP Pilot Award supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will drive the field of ASD forward. Research projects should include a testable hypothesis based on a strong scientific rationale. This award is not intended to support the continuation of existing studies or the next logical extension and/or incremental step. Through the Pilot Award, the ARP seeks to promote multidisciplinary collaborations (e.g., special education, biomedical science, preclinical research); to develop and validate biologically relevant animal models of autism (with appropriate justification for its relevance to a given subgroup); to investigate the implications of immunological response and ASD; and to leverage existing biological samples, clinical populations, and databases to provide power to test ideas. |
