This grant is for supporting the BAFB’s Integrated Natural Resource Management Plan (INRMP) through an investigative study of short grass prairie soil and vegetation. Its core purpose is to promote soil and water conservation by controlling erosion and sedimentation from land-disturbing activities, and by encouraging natural landscaping techniques like xeriscaping. Furthermore, the grant aims to effectively manage wildlife populations by implementing an ecosystem management approach, which emphasizes the success of native soil and vegetation. This initiative aligns with the Department of the Air Force’s broader environmental conservation goals, ensuring land capability supports the military mission without net loss, and reflecting federal land management directives.

Description: | Purpose, Objectives and Deliverables: The Integrated Natural Resource Management Plan (INRMP) defines natural resources management goals and objectives that are consistent with the military mission and ensure no net loss in the capability of installation lands to support the military mission. INRMP goals and objectives reflect statutory and regulatory, Executive Order (EO), and DoD and Air Force policy directives for federal land management and environmental conservation programs. Additionally, the INRMP goals and objectives support regional, state, and local initiatives to ensure consistency of management across the landscape and accomplishment of mutually-beneficial actions to achieve strategic goals. In accordance with the BAFB INRMP Section 10 Goals and Objectives, Goal 10.4 is to promote conservation of soil and water resources with the following applicable objectives: 10.4.3 to control erosion and sedimentation from land-disturbing/earth-moving activities and 10.4.6 to promote alternatives to traditional landscaping techniques (i.e. xeriscaping, etc.) and when applicable natural vegetation. Also, BAFB INRMP Section 10 Goals and Objectives, Goal 10.5 is to effectively manage wildlife with the following applicable objective 10.5.1 to implement ecosystem management approach, which implies soil and native vegetative success. Thus, the before mentioned BAFB INRMP goals and objectives establishes the justification and need for this project. |
