This Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) grant is a cooperative agreement with Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota (SMUMN) aimed at advancing wetlands mapping technology. SMUMN, uniquely qualified due to prior collaboration with FWS on similar projects, will develop and implement innovative techniques for digitally capturing and updating wetlands map data. This includes processing raster image scans, annotated aerial photography, and utilizing image analysis. The project will focus on cutting-edge methods for converting raster to vector data and digitizing hard copy annotations. A critical component involves developing robust data verification and quality control procedures to ensure all resulting data meets the high FWS quality standards, significantly enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of national wetlands inventory efforts.

Additional Information
Agency Name: | Fish and Wildlife Service |
Description: | Under the terms of this cooperative agreement task, Saint Marys University of Minnesota (SMUMN) will work cooperatively with the Fish and Wildlife Services (FWS) National Wetlands Inventory, National Standards and Support Team (NSST), to develop and implement techniques for the digital capture of raster image scans, annotated aerial photography and for the image analysis and updating of wetlands map data in a selected coastal watershed. SMUMN is uniquely qualified for this cooperative venture. The FWS has previously worked with SMUMN to develop prototype methods for the accurate conversion of hardcopy wetland photo delineations to GIS databases. Similar techniques will be used in this project, however, research and workflow process development will incorporate recent advances in GIS technology specifically related to raster to vector data, hard copy annotations to digits, and image analysis in collaboration with FWS. SMUMN and FWS will also continue this working cooperation to develop data verification and quality control procedures to ensure data developed through this agreement meet FWS quality standards. |
