This grant, offered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under the U.S. Department of Transportation, is for supporting the Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network (CIREN). Its primary purpose is to fund cooperative agreements aimed at improving the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of motor vehicle crash injuries. The ultimate goal is to significantly reduce fatalities, disabilities, and associated human economic costs resulting from crashes. Funding was made available to American College of Surgeons (ACS) or State equivalent Level One Trauma Centers and university-based biomechanics research laboratories. Agreements were structured with a base year plus four optional one-year extensions, contingent on funding availability, to advance crucial crash injury research for public benefit.
