The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is offering cooperative agreements for model training programs in hazardous materials and waste worker health and safety. Its purpose is to prevent work-related harm by training workers to protect themselves and communities from hazardous substance exposure. This covers hazardous waste operations, transportation, environmental restoration, and chemical emergency response, given the severe, often unknown, hazards encountered. A key goal is to build institutional competency for quality training programs. NIEHS plans to fund 15-20 awards, totaling approximately $26 million, over five years.

Description: | Purpose. This FOA issued by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) invites applications for cooperative agreements to support the development of model programs for the training and education of workers engaged in activities related to hazardous materials and waste generation, removal, containment, transportation and emergency response. The major objective of this solicitation is to prevent work-related harm by assisting in the training of workers in how best to protect themselves and their communities from exposure to hazardous materials encountered during hazardous waste operations, hazardous materials transportation, environmental restoration of contaminated facilities or chemical emergency response. A variety of sites, such as those involved with chemical waste clean up and remedial action and transportation-related chemical emergency response may pose severe health and safety concerns to workers and the surrounding communities. These sites contain a multiplicity of hazardous substances, sometimes unknown substances, and often the site is uncontrolled. A major goal of the Worker Education and Training Program (WETP) is to provide assistance to organizations in developing their institutional competency to provide appropriate model training and education programs. The Applicant Information Meeting is Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at NIEHS where more information about this FOA and the WETP will be shared. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the (U45) Cooperative Agreement Mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NIEHS intends to commit a total of approximately $26 million in FY 2010 to fund 15 to 20 cooperative agreements in response to this FOA for a period of 5 years. |
