Additional Information

Agency Name: National Institutes of Health
Description: Purpose. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) solicits grant applications from institutions/organizations to participate in a new NHLBI Prematurity and Respiratory Outcomes Program (PROP). This cooperative, multidisciplinary scientific group will investigate hypotheses on the molecular mechanisms that contribute to respiratory disease risk of the premature newborn with the long-term goal of improving outcomes in the first year of life. The Program will consist of up to five Clinical Research Centers (CRC), a Steering Committee, and a Data Coordinating Center (DCC). CRC applicants will each propose a detailed hypothesis of a mechanism that contributes to respiratory disease risk of a defined cohort, as well as innovative molecular/functional biomarkers to define the cohort, predict the severity of respiratory outcomes for that cohort, and serve as surrogate endpoints in evaluation of risk modification. This program will require collaborations between neonatologists, pulmonologists, and scientists with expertise in cutting-edge technology (such as bioengineering, molecular genetics, or imaging). Use of the multiple PI mechanism is strongly encouraged.
Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the Research Project Cooperative Agreement (U01) mechanism of support.
Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NHLBI intends to commit approximately $1,500,000 total costs for FY2010. The total amount to be awarded for the Prematurity and Respiratory Outcomes Program will be a maximum of $18,500,000 total costs for the 5-year project period. It is anticipated that up to 5 CRCs and 1 DCC will be awarded.
