This Office of Justice Programs grant supports methodological research to redesign the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). The NCVS, initiated in 1972, generates national crime estimates, including unreported incidents. Its crime screening protocol is a vital methodological component, with current questions adopted after a 1992 redesign. This project focuses on a comprehensive analysis of both current and pre-redesign crime screening questions. This analysis will inform future questionnaire redesign efforts by clarifying how the survey’s screening process has operated, aiming to enhance the NCVS’s accuracy and relevance.
