This grant, authorized by the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), is for museums, Indian Tribes, and Native Hawaiian organizations. Its primary purpose is to assist these entities in undertaking projects crucial for the repatriation of Native American human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony. Funds must specifically be used for consultation and/or documentation projects. Consultation activities support efforts related to cultural affiliation determinations and making or responding to repatriation requests. Documentation projects focus on establishing geographical origin, cultural affiliation, and other basic facts surrounding the acquisition of Native American human remains or cultural items. The ultimate goal of these combined efforts is to facilitate the appropriate control, treatment, and repatriation of NAGPRA-eligible human remains and cultural items, ensuring compliance with the Act.
