The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is offering this grant to the Upper Tennessee River Roundtable, a 501(c)(3) organization. This grant is for the purpose of acquiring, reclaiming, and restoring the Stone Creek Tipple Site in rural Lee County, Virginia. Erosion from this abandoned site is a continuing source of mine-related sediment, adversely affecting water quality in the Straight Creek and North Fork Powell River, and impacting critical habitat for threatened and endangered mussels and fish. The site is ineligible for other reclamation programs and lacks corporate liability for cleanup. This funding will eliminate the site as a source of harmful sediment, thereby protecting the Powell River watershed’s ecosystem. This is a single-source award, recognizing the recipient’s unique technical expertise.
