The US Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District, is offering a grant to recover and analyze 19th and early 20th century tidal data stored in the US National Archives. The goal is to tie this historical data to the modern record, helping to understand the evolution of extreme water levels due to climate change. By extending the historical tidal record, this project aims to provide valuable information on flood risks and changing sea levels at tidal stations nationwide. This cooperative agreement, awarded under the Water Resources Development Act of 1986 SEC 731, focuses on studying rising oceans. Deadline: Sep 22, 2014.

Description: | The US Army corps of Engineers, Portland District (USACE) intends to enter into a cooperative agreement to recover and analyze 19th and early 20th century tidal data. Up to 40 years of additional tide data exists in the US National Archives for various long-term tide gages around the country, but that data has been unavailable and un-analyzed for more than a century. Within this work effort, benchmark and datum records will be recovered and tied to the modern record. The goal of this work is to recover important pre-digital historical tidal data that up to this point has not been available for analysis and to help define how extreme water levels (such as the 10 year or 100 year return period event) are evolving at locations around the country. This data will be used to extend the historical record which will help provide information relevant to climate and sea level change at the various tidal stations addressed in the work. An increased tidal record can inform the public and regions of the country on expected future conditions including flood risk due to changing tides, sea level and, in some cases, river flow.
This cooperative agreement will be awarded pursuant to the Water Resources Development Act of 1986 SEC 731 Study of Rising Oceans. |
