The US Geological Survey, Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center (NOROCK), is providing funding to evaluate elk blood test data and assess the impact of experimental feed distribution and feeding season duration on reducing brucellosis transmission. This study aims to determine if changes in feeding regimes at elk feedgrounds have led to a decrease in seroprevalence of brucellosis. Researchers will analyze existing data and conduct a thorough examination to understand the relationship between feeding practices and disease transmission among elk populations. The grant includes the expectation of producing a thesis and manuscript upon completion of data analysis. Application deadline: May 21, 2019.

| Description: | The US Geological Survey, Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center (NOROCK), is offering a funding opportunity to evaluate and analyze existing elk (Cervus canadensis) blood test data to determine if experimental manipulation of feed distribution and feeding season duration are succeeding in lowering elk-to-elk brucellosis transmission (as indicate by site-specific seroprevalence) over time. Previous studies have indicated that prevalence of brucellosis on the supplemental feedgrounds is correlated with the length of the feeding season, and the contact rate with an aborted fetus (i.e., the mode of brucellosis transmission) is associated with density of elk and style of feeding. In response, managers have been altering the feeding regime at a subset of elk feedgrounds for the past several years. To date there has been no assessment as to whether these manipulations are having any impact on the seroprevalence of brucellosis in elk. Upon completion of data analysis, a thesis and completed manuscript would be expected. |
