Description: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) intends to award the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission a single source grant to accomplish a scientific review of the salmon and steelhead California Hatchery programs to provide recommendations to protect, enhance and recover natural salmon and steelhead populations, maintain sustainable fisheries, and improve cost-effectiveness of hatchery programs. Pacific salmon support important commercial and recreational fisheries in California. Historically low numbers of salmon returns to California Rivers resulted in fisheries closures for the past two seasons. Depleted natural salmon and steelhead stocks in California and associated economic and biological loss prompted Congress to direct the USFWS to conduct a scientific review of California hatcheries (H.R. Conference Report 111-316, October 28 2009)To view the Notice of Intent, click on “Application” tab on the right side near the top of this page.
