The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is offering this cooperative agreement to a Californian Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU) partner. This grant is for developing and implementing experiential communication strategies for scientific forecasts of infrequent events. Unlike common weather forecasts, infrequent hazard warnings—such as aftershock predictions following a major earthquake—often leave decision-makers unprepared to effectively use the information. This initiative aims to address this critical gap. Drawing on social science research, experiential and interactive communication methods have proven highly effective in improving information utilization. The purpose of this grant is to enhance the understanding and application of critical scientific information during rare but high-risk events, thereby improving preparedness and response when risks are significantly elevated.

| Description: | The USGS is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for experiential communication of scientific forecasts for infrequent events. Experiential and interactive communications are shown to be effective in the social science research literature. When hazard forecasts are uncommon (unlike the weather forecast) decision-makers are often not be prepared or trained to use the information. Such situations present when aftershock forecasts are issued following a large earthquake when risks are significantly elevated. |
