The USGS is offering a grant to study and map igneous rock lithologies, ores, and alteration zones in Precambrian-age rocks in S.E. Missouri. The project aims to characterize known deposits and identify potential unknown deposits to support mineral resource assessments and industry exploration in the region. The PI will provide guidance on sampling and petrophysical measurements of rocks and ores. Sampling will include drill cores, abandoned mines, and outcrop locations, with a focus on delineating the subsurface geology. This grant opportunity closes on April 14, 2015.

Description: | This study proposes to build upon previous work to incorporate drill hole data with modern geologic and geophysical knowledge to produce an improved geologic map of intrusive and extrusive igneous rock lithologies, ores, and alteration zones within Precambrian-age rocks for the study area. Better definition of these factors will aid in characterization of the setting and origin of the known Fe-Cu-Co-Au-REE deposits, and will facilitate identification of potential unknown deposits, providing a basis for mineral resource assessments and new industry exploration in the region. The PI for this project will provide direction on and assistance with sampling and petrophysical measurements of igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, ores, and alteration zones in aid of delineation of the subsurface geology of the region. Sampling will include drill cores housed at the Missouri Geological Survey (MGS), abandoned mines and outcrop locations. Information on the petrology and petrography of units will also be examined. |
