Description:: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center (NCCWSC) is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for research to develop tools that will narrow existing knowledge gaps on the status and key drivers of inland fisheries, given their importance in providing food for developing countries and in driving economies in developed countries. Extensive research on multiple downscaling climate models has been supported by the NCCWSC which has resulted in a range of downscaled forecasts for key environmental variables (i.e., water temperature, precipitation, water level, ice cover) in different regions of the United States (e.g., Pacific northwest (Shafer et al.), Florida peninsula (Smith et al.), Great Lakes region (Bunnell et al.)). By providing models that provide potentially less biased estimates of fish production as well as some key variables that could predict fish production, managers will have better information to both manage these key fisheries in their current state and perhaps prepare for future climate-induced changes. With improved understanding of the status of inland fisheries, managers can have better information to guide difficult decisions regarding competing demands for water, and perhaps ameliorate any perception that inland fisheries can afford to be marginalized and ignored.
