The Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space (WCRPOS) established a recreational fishing pond at Crystal Peak, which is critical for community outreach and angling opportunities. This grant is for addressing a significant leak in the pond, which prevents proper water retention. The pond’s consistent outflow directly supports a vital Lahontan cutthroat trout spawning and incubation channel that flows into the Truckee River. Adequate water flow from the pond is essential to maintain optimal conditions—velocities, depths, and temperatures—for fish reproduction and healthy rearing habitats. Without these necessary repairs, the ecological function of the spawning channel will be severely impaired, drastically reducing both fish reproduction and public recreational value. Funds from USFWS are supporting WCRPOS in this essential restoration.

Description: | This is a Notice of Intent to award. The Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space (WCRPOS)built a fish pond at Crystal Peak Pond to provide recreational fishing and outreach opportunities for children and the public. The pond has a leak and is not properly retaining water. The outflow from this pond supports the Lahontan cutthroat trout spawning and incubation channel that flows to the Truckee River. For the spawning channel to function properly, the pond must be able to retain water and provide a constant outflow to the channel. Adequate water flow is needed to maintain suitable water velocities, depths of water, and temperatures for the fish to reproduce by providing optimal spawning and rearing habitat. Without these necessary elements of a spawning channel, the recreational opportunities and outreach potential will be severely reduced. Funds are being provided by USFWS to assist WCRPOS with funding the pond repairs. |
